We Found the Pattern
We found the pattern.
The children who changed the most were the ones nobody expected. It had nothing to do with who was “good at math”.
A child’s world moves fast. It responds, it rewards, it lets them explore.
Then they sit down in a classroom and are handed a concept with no visible use, and a reason that comes down to: you’ll need it for the test.
Math isn’t the problem. It hasn’t changed in a thousand years, and it shouldn’t. What has fallen behind is how a child is asked to meet it.
Which is exactly why something physical lands so hard with this generation. A child raised on things that respond gives their attention to a thing that responds — one they can pick up, move, get wrong and fix.
Change the interface and the child gives you their attention — and a child who is paying attention is already learning. Everything else is downstream of that.
That isn’t a verdict on a generation of children, or on their teachers. It’s a score for how the subject is being delivered to them.
Attention and curiosity have rules. We learned them.
A child’s mind isn’t built to store facts. It’s built to survive — to pick up whatever makes it stronger in the world it can see. Curiosity is how it goes looking. Three things switch it on:
They learn by discovering
A child is not a USB stick. Nothing gets copied in. They try it, get it wrong, adjust — and the moment it works it belongs to them, because they found it.
A guide who believes they can
Agency has to be handed over, then backed. When a child can feel that the adult expects them to get there, confidence switches on — and confidence is what carries the hard part.
Play with real rules, and math inside something that matters
A goal, a move, a consequence — and something the eye locks onto and the hand can move. Buying, trading, winning. Put the number inside a real challenge and nobody asks what it’s for.
Hit all three at once and it stops feeling like teaching. It feels like a way in — straight past the part that resists being taught.
The part we didn’t expect
Across a hundred-plus schools the same thing kept happening — and not with the children we were watching for.
It was the ones written off as undisciplined. The ones who had stopped coming to math at all. They heard there were games in the room. They came to look.
Every child had their own board and their own task — the same idea at their own level, and an adult in front of them who expected them to get there.
They stayed. They sat down, and they learned. Math was never the barrier — the way in was.
And here is the actual secret, which isn’t a trick: we never came at a number from one direction.
The same idea in every shape it takes — built, spoken, written, expanded, exchanged, spent. Not repetition for its own sake, but the same truth from so many angles that it stops being something a child remembers and becomes something they know.
That is a 360° foundation under place value, addition and subtraction — set the way foundations are set, before anything is built on top. Foundations that deep don’t move, and a child standing on them has agency over math for the rest of their learning life.

Every level and every task order was built with real children first, and rewritten whenever they told us — by looking away — that it wasn’t working yet.

The first one we made for home
Power of 10
A board, coins a child builds every number with, and tasks that get harder exactly as fast as they do — ending in a shop where they spend what they have understood.
Ages 5+. Not a catch-up product. At five to eight nobody knows yet what a child will be — which is exactly why it’s the age worth spending attention on.
